The Hanseatic city of Roermond has belonged to the duchy of Guelders for many centuries and remains the seat of the bishop of Limburg to this day. Brimming with cultural and historical artefacts, the city centre has been designated as a conservation area. The municipality boasts a wealth of listed buildings such as churches and guild houses, its skyline dominated by the St. Christopher Cathedral, dating back to the 15th Century and the Munster Church, built in the 13th Century. Also well worth a look are the “Stadhuis“, the city hall from 1700, and the “Minderbroederskerk“ (The Franciscan Friars’ Church). At the heart of this city steeped in history, visitors will discover a wide range of shops and charming squares. These and the many cosy terraces and picturesque restaurants enhance the inviting character of the centre of Roermond.
Roermond’s Designer Outlet Centre has greatly increased the shopping opportunities available. Within easy walking distance of the city centre, famous names and designer brands abound in this shoppers’ paradise, offering attractive discounts all year round. On Thursdays shops stay open in Roermond until 9pm, courtesy of the “Koopavond“, or shopping evening. On Sundays, most of the shops are open in the afternoon. The Designer Outlet opens even for 363 days a year! Saturday is market day. The weekly market in front of the Stadhuis is as colourful as a picture postcard, whilst a smaller market takes place on the Munsterplein each Wednesday.
Outside the city, a wealth of places await discovery in the surrounding area. The small, romantic church of St Dionysius in Asselt is well worth a visit. Idyllically situated on the banks of an old tributary of the River Meuse, it lies diagonally opposite the Museum of History and Culture. Further inland ,in Boukoul, the grand castle of Hillenraad is hidden, and you can take a look at the Zuidewijk Spick mansion. Sadly, neither is open to the public.
